New Non-Medication Therapy to Treat Depression
The Mind Source Center, owned by Tucson Psychiatrist Stephen Streitfeld, M.D., is offering Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), a new, FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment for depression as an alternative to pharmaceutical medication.
TMS uses a powerful palm-sized electromagnet to generate an electrical stimulus in the part of the cortex of the brain associated with mood regulation. The electromagnet generates a magnetic pulse focused to stimulate the underactive areas of the brain that cause depression. The magnetic pulses cause the release of neurotransmitters that provide relief of symptoms for those living with depression. Typically, treatments are given daily over the course of four to six weeks. Patients are relaxed, awake and alert during treatments.
TMS therapy has shown positive results in a study published in the journal Psychiatric Times, with one in two patients experiencing a significant reduction in depression symptoms and freedom from the use of antidepressant medication. In the U.S., more than 12,000 people have used TMS to successfully relieve depression symptoms.
