To Encrypt or Not to Encrypt
Don & Iva Gibbens
GE Computing & Internet Services offers guidance to those who may be interested in using encryption to keep sensitive information safe on their computers. According to owner Don Gibbens, anyone who handles customer information, and keeps that information on their computers, should consider having their whole computer disk encrypted.
“Encryption is an additional layer of security to further protect any electronically stored data by converting it into unreadable code that cannot be deciphered easily by unauthorized parties,” explains Gibbens. “This will greatly reduce the risk of unauthorized access in the event the device is lost or stolen.”
An encryption consultation with GE Computing will answer the following: Do I need encryption? Do I need to encrypt the whole hard drive or will folder encryption do the trick? Are my computers at a high enough level to be able to handle encryption? What other factors need to be weighed—such as online or off-site backup? What will be the ongoing costs of encryption? How much will encryption cost now?
