West Side Story
The Loft Cinema will host two special screenings of West Side Story in 70mm film, at 7:30 p.m. on August 27, and noon on August 28. With a greater aspect ratio and higher resolution than 35mm film, 70mm is sharper, richer and more immersive—the ultimate in film projection.
With just the right mix of flamboyant theatricality, thrilling beauty and gritty realism, Romeo meets Juliet—or rather, Tony meets Maria—on the streets and rooftops of New York, and true love blooms, but their transgressive romance is taboo. Their rival neighborhood gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, will never accept the lovers’ star-crossed union, and trouble (as well as a lot of singing and dancing) ensues.
Created by the musical dream team of Leonard Bernstein, Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim, and starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, George Chakiris and Rita Moreno, this legendary 1961 film won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (Moreno), inspired countless generations of musical fanatics and brought Shakespeare’s classic tale of teenage romance to vibrant life.
