IONS Tucson will present a talk by Dr. John Fitch on integrating sustainable building and living with nature, at 6:30 p.m., November 4, at Unity of Tucson. Fitch will define sustainable and regenerative building and why the concept is so important to society, natural environments and the Earth’s biosphere. He will outline the steps and technologies of sustainable, regenerative building, using the solar-powered home he built in Redstone Canyon, Colorado, as an example. Lastly, he will discuss the environmental, economic and societal advantages of this type of building, including the spiritual benefits.

Fitch has undergraduate majors in both anthropology and zoology, with a M.A. and Ph.D. in zoology with emphases in ecology, animal behavior and systems science. Over the past 50 years, he has been fortunate to be able to work in academic, government and nonprofit institutions, including as a White House Fellow during the Carter Administration to study and address human impacts upon natural environments and the biosphere. He is currently the president of Sustaining Tomorrow Today Institute and working on a book describing planning, building and living in a sustainable home.

As a way of personally demonstrating what he advocates, he lives and works in a sustainable house in Redstone Canyon above Loveland and Ft. Collins, Colorado that has been visited by more than 400 people since it was built in 2010.
