What can vacations do for us and our loved ones? They can lower stress and heart disease, while helping us live fuller and happier lives, have better sex and make priceless memories.
There are several examples of studies that show correlation between vacations and happy, healthy people. Ernst & Young conducted an internal study of its employees and found that for each additional 10 hours of vacation time employees took, their year-end performance ratings improved 8 percent. Also, frequent vacationers were significantly less likely to leave the firm.
The Framingham Heart Study found that men who don’t take vacations were 30 percent more likely to have a heart attack and women were 50 percent more likely. A study from the University of Vienna found that after taking time off from work, vacationers had fewer stress-related physical complaints, such as headaches, backaches and heart irregularities, and many felt better weeks later.
Vacations also improve sex life. People who vacation report feeling closer, more romantic and sexier to their significant other. Research also shows that women not taking regular vacations were three times more likely to be depressed and anxious.
