Dr. Shannon Bybee’s Unique Approach to Functional Medicine

Dr. Shannon Bybee-Driscoll
Before becoming a medical doctor, Dr. Shannon Bybee worked as an engineer for 13 years. Her team was charged with building complex hardware and integrating highly sophisticated software. Dr. Bybee frequently performed debugging procedures, which are necessary to figure out the sources of problems and identify areas of improvement.
Bybee brings this same approach to her medical practice. By evaluating the oft-hidden causes of dysfunction, she’s able to restore patients to wellness, rather than simply treating their symptoms.
While an engineer, Bybee enjoyed competing in triathlons. She formed a lunchtime workout group at her office and also provided informal nutritional counseling to her coworkers. Dr. Bybee delighted in the results her coworkers experienced, including achieving weight loss, getting off medications, and enjoying an overall boost in wellness.
These experiences convinced Bybee that it was time to return to school—not to further her engineering education, but to change the world one patient at a time as a functional medicine provider. “Medicine and engineering are complementary fields, as the human body is a complex system with extensive interconnectivity following the same rules as electrical circuits, advanced chemistry and structural material science,” she explains.
Today, Bybee holds medical licenses in both Arizona and North Carolina. She works with patients in both states with either in-person visits or remotely via secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth appointments.
