Meditation For Increased Health and Wellness
Reneé Powers
Our thoughts influence our actions as well as our physical well-being. We hold the power to train our minds to reduce and eliminate stress, anxiety, tension and anger, improve relationships and be happier. In addition to improving quality of life, the relaxation that meditation brings can help to improve our physical health.
Meditation can help us to think more clearly and improve our energy levels so that we work more efficiently and tire less. It can help us to relax and create a distance from stressful situations so that we remain more in control and less overwhelmed by negative emotions. It can also help us to understand ourselves and to accept situations and live a happier, more positive life.
Learning a simple meditation practice can get one started on the road to better health. Sit comfortably in a quiet place. Close your eyes and follow the breath as you inhale and exhale. Keep the mind focused on the breath, each inhalation and each exhalation remaining present. If the mind wanders, bring it back to the breath.
The practice of meditation is not about remaining focused without your mind ever wandering (this will come in time), but about recognizing when the mind has drifted and bringing oneself back to the present moment. Meditation is about paying attention to the present moment, on purpose, continually bringing oneself back, without judgment. Meditation is a practice.
