Combining Life Coaching with Traditional Medicine
When one used to go to a doctor’s office, hospital, urgent care or medical clinic in the U.S., the Western medical tradition of “do no harm” or “extension of life” beliefs ruled the treatments offered. These were based on proven scientific methods used to diagnose and determine the illness/disease identified.
In today’s world, there are three disciplines to choose from: Psychiatry, Psychology and Life Coaching.

Since much of the population which was found in the Americas came from Western Europe, the Judeo-Christian ethics and beliefs determined the treatments prescribed. Treatments practiced by indigenous people were often ignored or dismissed as pagan. Western Medicine focused on diagnosing, curing, easing of pain/symptoms and slowing or stopping the progression of the illness/disease.
But as the 20th century matured, more and more people who came to the Americas were from different cultures and beliefs. These more varied treatments began to be viewed in a different light, especially since many, especially from the Greeks and Egyptians, had been used for 3,000 years or more. Some of these ancient remedies focused on the causes and the need to restore the overall balance within the body and mind. Eastern Medicine, originating in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia, often focused on correcting the imbalances within the entire body and mind. These new ideas often utilized a combination of non-tested methods, i.e., natural elements, acupuncture, herbs or tai chi.
As things changed, especially in the second half of the 20th century, so have newer approaches become more acceptable in the 21st century. This newer approach has been in the broad topic of “talk therapy”. Talk therapy, or Psychotherapy, has become more utilized by people looking to improve the life-work balance so much in demand.
There are three very separate, and distinct, disciplines within this broad group. Humans have discussed their inner lives and challenges since the first two have sat next to each other and communicated. The topics involved work, relationships and everyday life itself, and were often just to discover ways to deal with practical problems, issues and situations.
In today’s world, there are three disciplines to choose from: Psychiatry, Psychology and Life Coaching.
- Psychiatrists are medically trained and licensed to assist through prescribing medicines to ease chemical, mental or medical issues.
- Psychologists, who are trained and licensed professionals, can help in identifying the events or traumas causing the discomforts.
- Life Coaches use give-and-take conversations to help in identifying and providing directions by which troubling or unsettled circumstances can be modified, altered or undertaken to improve the quality of life lived.
